During his fourth State of the Union address to the National Congress, President Gabriel Boric enthusiastically spoke about a historic milestone for the country: the hosting of the Santiago 2027 Special Olympics World Games. The president highlighted the importance of this international sporting event, which will be held in Latin America for the first time in history, and emphasized the government’s commitment to the inclusion and dignity of people with intellectual disabilities.
“We were selected to host the 2027 Special Olympics World Games, which is a recognition of the country’s inclusion and equity. This way, we can once again experience the joy we had with the organization and success of the 2023 Pan American and Parapan American Games,” the President stated from the Hall of Honor of Congress in Valparaíso.
The Special Olympics World Games in Santiago will take place from 12 to 24 October 2027, with the epicenter being the National Stadium Park. The sporting event will bring together more than 6,000 athletes in 23 sports, and the Special Olympics Chile team will be comprised of a delegation of 500 athletes. It will be a unique opportunity to showcase the talent and efforts of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, as well as to foster a more just and inclusive society.
The mention in this public forum is key to the promotion and preparation of the Games and reinforces the role Chile seeks to play on the international stage as a country that promotes equity, integration, and human rights through sport.
